The Gale Construction Company Completes Construction Management Services for Two Schools for Students With Special NeedsROSELAND, N.J., JUNE 2, 2008 - The Gale Construction Company, LLC, a subsidiary of Mack-Cali Realty Corporation (NYSE: CLI), has completed construction management services for Somerset Hills Learning Institute in Bedminster, New Jersey, and The Calais School in Whippany, New Jersey.
"We are very pleased to see the completion of both of these private schools for children with special needs," said Stephen P. Trapp, president of the Gale Construction Company. "It is very gratifying to help build facilities that benefit communities, especially when you understand the enormous positive impact these schools will have on these children."
The work for Somerset Hills Learning Institute consists of the construction of a new 19,100 square-foot school for children with autism. The design is the work of Hone & Associates Architects of Lambertville, New Jersey.
The new building features six classrooms, each with a workspace for each of the five teachers, office area for the teacher trainer, and a restroom. "At Somerset Hills Learning Institute we have a 1:1 student/teacher ratio; therefore there are quite a few teachers, assistants and students working together simultaneously to make learning a priority," said Dr. Kevin Brothers, executive director of Somerset Hills Learning Institute. "These classrooms are efficiently designed units that accommodate five teachers and five students, and also feature restrooms; reducing the time that otherwise would be lost if the staff had to leave the classroom."
New construction also includes two kitchens, an adult education room, a video editing area, an infirmary and a large conference room equipped for distance-learning capabilities. In addition, a 50' x 50' outdoor recreational area is located in the building's courtyard.
The U-shaped wood frame structure, with a 28' high entry, is barn-like in appearance and blends well with the property's rural surroundings. As with many barn-like structures, the building features exposed, wood-beam ceilings. The building is filled with natural sunlight and, similar to mainstream schools, is painted in bright colors, so that the students will easily be able to acclimate when transitioned to another school.
For The Calais School, the Gale Construction Company provided services during the pre-construction and construction phases for a new addition. KSS Architects of Princeton, New Jersey, was the architectural firm. The building received a 9,000-square-foot addition and a 3,100-square-foot renovation to the existing space. The challenge involved creating an addition to the three-story building, which had not been updated since the 1940s. One of the school's most prominent improvements is a dramatic two-story entry pavilion, making for easier access to the school and to the new elevator, which is located in the lobby. Other renovations include a science and language classroom, occupational therapy space, conference area, restrooms, and various infrastructure improvements.
"Incorporating a new addition with our century-old facility was quite a feat," said David Leitner, executive director of The Calais School. "Bringing all the elements together required exceptional quality control and workmanship, which was achieved by Gale Construction and all the professionals who worked on this project."
"Somerset Hills Learning Institute and The Calais School are the latest examples of Gale Construction's successful work in the education sector," added Mr. Trapp. "Our other recently completed school projects in New Jersey include The P.G. Chambers School in Cedar Knolls and Solomon Schechter Day School in West Orange."
